Child-birth, aging and hormones can only mean one thing to women – Hair Loss! Not only does this become a major cause of worry for women, it also makes them lose their confidence and go into depression. In an effort to make things normal, they resort to many medications, creams and hair oils that only tend to worsen things.
What exactly is Hair Transplant?
Hair Transplant is a surgical procedure which involves extraction of hair follicles from the back of your head (called the donor area) and their transplantation on to an area where you are experiencing hair thinning (called the recipient area). The hair follicles at the back of your head are supposedly permanent in nature and they can stimulate the regrowth of hair, wherever they are transplanted to.
What are the causes of hair loss in women?
There are many causes for hair loss in women including:
This is a phenomenon that you come across after your pregnancy, drastic weight loss, extreme stress or a major surgery. During this stage you shed a lot of hair daily, especially while brushing, styling or shampooing. It is very important to find out the actual cause of such hair fall and rule it out before going for hair transplant.
Hereditary Hair Loss:
This is also called androgenetic alopecia, where the cause of hair loss is a gene that you may have inherited from one of your parents. The hairline behind your bangs starts thinning in this condition. This might start in your twenties and develop at a slower phase. The pattern of your hair loss is determined here through a biopsy of your scalp or a blood test.
A deficiency in thyroid hormone can affect your skin, your nails and your hair, as much as it affects the energy that your body needs, in order to function. Constipation, Fatigue, Depression, Unexplained weight gain and difficulties in concentrating are all symptoms of hypothyroidism. A blood test would be required to diagnose this problem, which can be treated by proper medication.
This is an autoimmune disease where in your immune system starts attacking your healthy tissues. Extreme fatigue, oral ulcers, swollen and painful joints and headaches are the symptoms of this disorder. Hair loss might start mildly during brushing or shampooing your hair and as time goes it might start coming out in patches with rashes on your scalp. A blood test and examination of your joints can help in diagnosing this condition.
Iron Deficiency Anemia:
This is a condition where your body doesn’t produce enough red blood cells to transport oxygen to all the cells of your body. This reduces the energy in your body and may cause weakness, extreme fatigue and pale looking skin. A blood test will usually determine this condition and it is very important to eat iron-rich foods and take iron supplements.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome:
Irregular periods, increase in facial hair growth, ovarian cysts and acne are the symptoms of PCOS. While triggering hair loss on your scalp, this condition will increase the hair growth in the other parts of your body, due to a rise in the levels of your testosterone. Your doctor may advise birth control pills to correct this condition which can be diagnosed by a blood test. You may also be advised to lose some weight.
Certain Skin Conditions of the Scalp:
Unhealthy scalp would mean inflammation, making it difficult for your hair to grow. This can be because of skin conditions like psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis or fungal infections. A physical examination of your scalp will reveal such a condition, which might even require a biopsy of your scalp.
This is a condition where your hair follicles get attacked by your body’s immune system. An illness or stress usually triggers this off. Here, you will find round smooth patches on your scalp, legs or eyebrows. Patterns of hair loss are identified to diagnose this condition and blood tests may be required to rule out certain underlying conditions.
This is one reason why most women come across hair loss. Excessive shampooing, dyeing or styling can definitely take a toll on your tresses. Chemicals and heat can weaken your hair. A pull test here would determine hair loss due to excessive styling.
While medications may stop further hair loss in most such causes, you may require hair transplant to stimulate the re-growth of hair in places where you have already lost hair.
Types of Hair Transplant surgeries
Follicular Unit Extraction and Follicular Unit Transplantation are two types of hair transplant surgeries that we carry out at Nu Cosmetic Clinic. Given below is some more information about these two procedures:
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant for women:
FUE is a treatment where in the hair follicles from the back of your head are extracted one by one using a punch that creates a small circular incision around the follicular unit so as to separate them from the surrounding tissues. These follicular units are then transplanted individually on the recipient area.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) hair transplant for women:
Follicular Unit Transplantation or FUT as it is called, is used in scalp hair transplants.A long thin strip of skin is first removed from your donor area, which is the back of your head. Using a stereo microscope, the surgeon will then dissect the individual follicular units from this strip. These are then transplanted, not individually, but in groups of 1, 2, 3 or 4, taking care of the alignment and positioning.
Targeted Areas for Hair Transplant:
Apart from the head, there are various other areas where women may need hair and these include eyebrows and eye lashes
Scalp Hair Transplant:
Healthy hair is a sign of beauty in women. Nevertheless, it is very difficult to maintain such hair throughout the lifetime. Aging, genetics and many other conditions may cause hair loss that may even lead to extreme thinning of hair on scalp. The good news here is that you need not worry about your baldness or hair thinning any more.
Apart from genetics, aging, hormonal imbalances and various other conditions, regular threading can also start showing its effects on your eyebrows with time. Those patches in between your eyebrows can be hard to hide at times. Using an eyebrow pencil cannot be the ultimate solution. Eyebrow restoration / Transplant is a unique solution.
Beautiful eye lashes are what every woman wants. However, not every woman is fortunate enough to sport beautiful eyelashes throughout her life. False eyelashes may not be a healthy option. Eyelash transplant is the way to go.
